    There actually are good solutions for ice dams. Insulation, ventilation, and ice & water shield all work together to prevent and protect your home from ice dams. Insulation keeps your heat in the house and out of the attic minimizing snow melt. Attic ventilation removes the heat that does make it into the attic. Ice & water guard goes on when the shingles are applied preventing water from penetrating the roof sheathing should insulation and/or ventilation be inadequate.
